Local Law Enforcement
Around 50 vehicles have been covered with what seems to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Cars, building surfaces and mailboxes were vandalized, sometimes with swastikas, they reported in a release.
Law enforcement say they were contacted late on Wednesday, when a resident discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish liquid.
The substance had been applied in the pattern of a swastika, they reported.
Officers then located many other smeared automobiles and house walls in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation prohibiting the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.
Police state preliminary tests indicate the liquid was likely blood from a person.
"Currently there is no lead as to its origin; authorities are currently not aware of any injuries in association with the occurrence," they stated.
Municipal representatives said they were working "to unravel the mystery" and have asked to the residents for information.
A senior political figure commented the incident left him without words and had to be solved promptly.
"This event strikes at the core of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the far-right violent incident half a decade ago," he wrote on online, recalling the killing of nine individuals by a assailant focusing on people of foreign heritage in five years prior.
