Tetris Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

As any major honors show approaches, there’s always an outcry for the addition fresh award types to recognize unsung work and satisfy the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. It would be amazing. The same goes for board games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification backing this proposal remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of video games, showing incredible range they barely qualify as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications effectively encompass numerous genres, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Consider three of recent excellent titles, all very different: building puzzles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Which classification works within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens outstanding logic titles published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything during that awards season
  • A different innovative game received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent compact experiences, however the design of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games rank among the most-played games worldwide and have been for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, while interacting with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these represent titles without proper classification at major gaming awards. Logic title developers operate at the hard edge of video game design, developing some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait decades.
