Seven alleged members of German left-wing extremist organization stand trial over series of attacks

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network began their trial on Tuesday, facing charges for violent actions against far-right activists that resulted in the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

Global terror listing and legal charges

Recently, the US government classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization along with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany claim the group was responsible for attacks on locations in Germany and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose venue was known as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are said to have employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several severely injured.

Trial details and international connections

The trial involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. Two defendants, named as Johann G. and Paul M., are additionally accused for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honor” that draws rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists prior to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and organizational structure

The former East Germany has long been a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a high-ranking member within the organization, tasked with planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M, he is accused of organizing training sessions where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities overseen by Paul M, the network allegedly accumulated tools, pepper spray, concealment items and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and global responses

A different activist formerly involved with the group, Lina E., became a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the United States, freezes any assets they could possess within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and called on the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The threat posed by the organization has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have received convictions or remain detained.”
