One Piece Ends a 27-Year Tradition in 2026

It's the end of an iconic period for ongoing anime, with the production studio revealing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has run continuously for more than 25 years and featured dozens of filler arcs. Commencing in January, after the Egghead Island arc wraps up, the animated series will take a quarterly break until spring, when the next major arc begins.

Updated Production Plan

Going forward, One Piece will release a pair of cours every year for a cap of two dozen installments. Toei states this will help the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the universe — including more material, rhythm, and pacing of the source material.” Yet, producers end by promising “exciting surprises” during the hiatus period, which suggests more One Piece content, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, set to premiere in the interim.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The series anime had a half-year break that started in late 2024 and ended in early 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to improve the visuals and allow the manga to build a lead to prevent a faster anime pace and repetitive summaries. The show couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has managed to supply fans with countless action sequences, high-quality animation, and less filler than ever before.

Adopting Modern Trends

Although some recap episodes sprouted up during this season, the benefits of this new production schedule far surpass the occasional interruption in the story. This additionally allows the manga, which is currently in the middle of the latest arc, to gain more ground on the anime. Per the news, this may lead to one episode of the anime adapting a single manga chapter, with some instead handling one and a half chapters or additional to make up for time.

This concludes of a generation for anime, as One Piece is the last big series to abandon the traditional method of creation, which prioritized airing for almost the entire year. This explains why iconic series such as Bleach, and of course One Piece have so many filler arcs, and the standard of the animation can vary widely between one episode and the next. Nowadays, anime production is organized in seasons, with one or two maximum coming out each year, enabling better quality and greater accuracy to the original work.
